We made our way out to sunny southern California to spend time with the family, start sifting through Heath's childhood memorabilia (currently in storage), and celebrate Mackensey's graduation.
The time with family was great. We had the opportunity to love on our beautiful niece, Maddie, who we hadn't seen since Thanksgiving. She's getting so big and so agile! She has a very distinct, sweet personality and is an absolute doll.
Our second night in town we went to the Cheesecake Factory for Mac's celebratory dinner. One of her travelball coaches, Julie, joined us. It was cool to spend time with someone who has been such an important part of her life over the last year. As our gift, we gave Mac a set of gift cards to some of Heath's favorite places in Georgetown — the Tombs, Booeymongers, Old Glory, La Madeleine — and a set of walking tours for the city (for when the $$ runs out). We think she liked it.
So things were going along just fine and dandy. Everyone was having a good time. We had our In-n-Out burgers...life was good. A little warm, but good. We made our way to the graduation ceremony, touting umbrellas to protect us from the sun and a cooler of water, and waited patiently for "Pomp & Circumstance" to blare over the stadium loudspeakers. Unfortunately, we never heard Mac's name called because she was quite sick behind the scenes. We scooped her up, headed back home and then Clyde, Ash and myself also became quite sick. One word: Yuck!
I spent one more day in "recovery" before heading out to Albuquerque. Heath left the day after I did, not feeling great, but without ever experiencing the full wrath of the 24-hour bug. An ideal last visit to Mission Viejo? Probably not. But time with the Carters is always well-spent and we couldn't be more proud of Mackensey. We love you!
